May Reading Roundup

May Reading Roundup

We may be a third of the way through June already, and I may have just posted my April roundup mere moments ago, but here's what I read in May!

Frat Wars by Saxon James - I will forever remember this month as the month that I discovered Saxon James, who has become a new favorite of mine. The tagline says it all: "We’re basically Romeo and Juliet. But dudes. And without all the dying." This follows the unlikely relationship developing between Chad and Bailey, members of rival fraternities. Honestly, frats and bro culture are not my thing at all, but I enjoyed this so much. Both of the main characters are incredibly charming, and I really enjoyed watching their relationship develop. 4 stars.

If This Gets Out by Sophie Gonzales & Cale Dietrich - sticking with the queer romance theme, we've got a tale of two members of a boy band who find love while on a whirlwind tour. I really enjoyed this, especially the element of the boys standing up to their record label, who demanded that they remain in the closet. Great characters, and a very satisfying ending. 4 stars.

Spin Me Right Round by David Valdes - more queer romance! This time with time travel! In the 80s! Gen Z Luis gets hit on the head and sent back to the 80s, where he's in school with his parents. A lot of fun, especially if you're a fan of Back to the Future, like I am. 3 stars.

Master of Mayhem by Saxon James - book two in the Frat Wars series was somehow even better than the first! Saxon James does it again with the story of Robbie and Brandon, the frat's maker of mayhem and risk manager. Cute, sweet, and spicy. 4 stars.

My Policeman by Bethan Roberts - I read this as part of an online bookclub that I joined last month. It's not something that I would have picked up on my own, but I'm glad that I read it. Roberts' prose is fabulous, you can really get swept up in the writing. But the tone of this one (a tale of being gay in 1950s England) was a bit darker than I would have liked. I think it's important that we read these kinds of stories, but the ending rubbed me the wrong way. 3 stars.

Vampires, Heart & Other Dead Things by Margie Fuston - vampires and New Orleans are two things that I can never resist, so I had really high hopes for this one. Ultimately, I found the main character, Victoria, to be a bit one dimensional and selfish. But I did enjoy reading about her getting to know my favorite city through a series of challenges set by a mysterious and alluring vampire.

And that's it for May - have you read any of these? I'd love to hear your thoughts!
